Brownfield stun Shallowater

It’s hard to play with players in foul trouble.

Shallowater had key players sat the bench in key moments of the game as Brownfield took advantage of the opportunity, which proved to be key with the Lady Bucs earning a 50-45 victory over defending state champions Shallowater.

Point guard Lindsey Herrera was active from the field along with the interior play of Tia Johnson to see the Lady Cubs in front, 25-23, at half.

The Lady Cubs took off to a 6-0 run to start the second half and turned to a back-and-forth game.

Shallowater junior Bree Brattain struggled to find sync offensively, struggling with foul trouble throughout the game. Senior guard Tynli Harris also found herself in foul trouble throughout the game.

Brownfield advance to the state semifinal for the first time in school history and the first time at state since 1988, where notable alumni in Sheryl Swoopes suited up in the Lady Cub uniform.

De Soto overcome defending state champs

The inside game for the Lady Eagles was on the right rhythm.

The trio of Sa’Myah Smith, Tionna Herron and Amina Muhammad combined for 35 points and 21 rebounds as De Soto topped Duncanville for a third time this season as they will return to the state semifinals for the first time since 2019, the second trip in three years. Kendall Brown came off the court from injury and soon, found herself back in the action as standouts Ja’Mia Harris and Michayla Gatewood are already out for the season with torn ACL injuries.

How much of an impact will this have down the road against tougher opposition?

Sanderlin leads Judson to OT victory

Kierra Sanderlin is good at the game of basketba..

The Rutgers signee recorded a game high 30 points to lead Judson past a tough and tall Reagan squad, 58-52 in the 6A Region IV final.

Sanderlin also got a key steal in the overtime period that gave Judson the outright lead for the rest of the game.

The win sets up a highly-anticipated matchup with state power Cypress Creek, who wield Texas bound Rori Harmon and Kyndall Hunter, who garnered McDonald’s All-American honors.

Boerne upset district-mate Fredericksburg

It’s never easy to beat a team three times in the season and Boerne showed that was just the case.

Abby Smith received the pass from Averi Aaron to score a go-ahead layup that sealed the victory for the Lady Hounds, securing their ticket to the state semifinals for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.

The defense was the big key for the Lady Hounds being strong on the defensive boards to get the hard-earned victory.

Boerne now face the state’s most explosive offense in Hardin-Jefferson during the weekend, at a time and place to be determined.

Other statewide notes

Cedar Park punched their ticket to the state semifinals for the first time in program history as they topped district rival Georgetown 44-12 in a defensive battle. Shelby Hayes led all scorers with 17 points. Gisella Maul added 13 in the victory.

Outside of upsets, Fairfield flexed their muscle in their respective regional final against Lexington. Using their size and athleticism, the state champions from 4A last year did not look back in a 65-29 rout of a solid Lexington team.
Pinkston continues their deepest run in the playoffs as senior Tamia Flores hit a pair of three pointers late to escape with a 46-39 victory over Gilmer.

Flores, an unsigned senior, tallied a game high 19 points and led the Lady Vikings to the first state semifinal appearance in school history.

Wellington has been improving with each game played throughout the season.

On Tuesday, they gave Panhandle all they can handle.

Tarleton-bound Mason Jones led the team in scoring with 17 points in a physical bout that saw Panhandle earn a 43-36 victory to give the Ettes their second state trip in three seasons.

Wellington’s Kyla Kane finished with 17 points to lead the Lady Rockets.

Nazareth has seen the upper hand in matchups in size until Tuesday.

Claude came in and matched the Swiftette size but the experience came in key as Nazareth head to the 30th state tournament with a 54-42 victory.

Merry Gerber and Addie Dyer hit big three-point shots in the fourth quarter that gave the Swiftettes the push they were looking for to earn the hard-fought victory.

Makenzy Corrales led all scorers with 15 points. Gerber added 13 in the victory.

It was not a good day for regional favorites as College Station lost to the hands of an upstart program in Beaumont United, Snook outmuscled San Saba and Chireno were edged out by Neches in overtime.
