The day that was in TXHSGBB playoffs (2/19): Canutillo stun Amarillo High, Seminole complete comeback against Hereford

[ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type=”show” ihc_mb_who=”4,5″ ihc_mb_template=”1″ ]

Canutillo upset perennial power Amarillo

Amarillo doesn’t lose against El Paso opposition that often. Since the 2006-07 season, the Lady Sandies have compiled a 14-1 record against El Paso teams.

The winning streak came to an abrupt end.

Canutillo, led by standout Alyssa Bonilla, who tallied a game high 33 points, converted the pair of game-winning free throws in the final seconds of the overtime period as Canutillo stunned the Lady Sandies and advanced to the regional quarterfinals for the first time in school history.

Canutillo await the winner of Lubbock Cooper and Andress, which is on upset watch.

Seminole complete comeback in the fourth quarter to win.

Down 43-30 after three quarters and trailing in the rebounding battle, it looked unlikely for the Maidens to stage a comeback.

In the postseason, anything is possible.

The Maidens used the full court pressurecontested shots on the defensive end and made key steals in big moments with Seminole completing the comeback over the Lady Whitefaces, 61-53, stretching their win streak to 18 consecutive wins.

Seminole outscored Hereford, 31-10, in the final frame and went 16-18 from the free throw line.

Hereford had opportunities to stretch the lead with the defense playing well, but the extra possessions resulted in turnovers.

Another first for the Valley

Another first for a Valley team is trending is a good direction and the momentum is building for the remaining Valley teams left in the postseason. Sharyland Pioneer was in a tight battle with Victoria West and prevailed, 38-35, to punch their ticket to the regional quarterfinals for the first time in school history, and outscored Victoria West, 15-10 in the final quarter of play. Jordan Bravo led the team in scoring with 12 points. Pioneer will now face another Victoria ISD team in Victoria East on Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at Miller High School in Corpus Christi.

SATURDAY GAMES TO WATCH

Fort Bend Dulles (23-0, W20) vs. Jersey Village (22-2, R17); 3 p.m., Delmar Fieldhouse, Houston

On all levels, this is the game of the day to highlight on your schedule. Dulles have the playmaker to count on in tight situations in Nya Threatt.

Jersey Village are well-coached and are hard to stop with as they have one of the more explosive scoring duos in the Houston area with Gia Adams and Briana Peguero leading the scoring charge. Which defense will come up big for their respective team to get the victory?

Shallowater (W2) vs. Canadian (W1); 3 p.m., Caprock HS, Amarillo

This has been a highly-anticipated regional quarterfinal that looks to live up to the hype on Saturday afternoon.

If you do not know, Shallowater have the star in Bree Brattain, a tough post presence in Taylor Moravcik and the “QB1” of the offense in Tynli Harris.

Canadian also have a tough interior playmaker in Mattie Boyd, and a solid guard tandem of Briley Merket and Jasmyn Moreno, who both can shoot the ball from anywhere on the floor.

The Fillie defense is what drives Shallowater to a perfect record this year and the size, experience, and defensive effort of Canadian will be a key part of their success. With this matchup looking on the front of strength-on-strength, it could be a low-scoring battle between the top-five teams with the first team scoring 40 points could be key.

Stephenville (21-2, W6) vs. Bridgeport (17-7, R7); 7:30 p.m., Aledo

Both teams have the length in the post as the matchup to watch will be Stephenville’s Alee McClendon and Bridgeport’s Ashley Ingram. The guard play is what will separate either team to the gold ball.

The Sissies do have talented guards in Lexine Stone, Raegen Hanks and Jade Hall, one of the more underrated small forwards in the state.

Stephenville bring in the junior duo of Landri Withers and Jaylee Matthews in what should be a fun chess match to watch between two solid coaching staffs.

Brazosport (18-2, W25) vs. Boerne (21-4, R28); 4 p.m., Hallettsville

South Texas basketball fans will have their own big matchup to prepare for with another top-10 battle with Brazosport and Boerne in an area round matchup.

Boerne’s Jamie Reude, the daughter of head coach Amy Reude is one of the upcoming talents in the state to watch and the experience is what makes the Lady Hounds go.

The Lady Exporters have been riding a 15-game winning streak and it’s thanks to the inside-out play of senior guard Treanna Johnson, who averages 13.7 points per game and post Aja Gore, who is currently averaging 13.3 points per game and 11.3 rebounds.

The interior will be a key area to watch along with staying out of foul trouble.

UNDERRATED GAMES TO WATCH

Converse Judson (22-1, W27) vs. Lake Travis (18-7, R26); 5 p.m., Buda Johnson HS

Fairfield (22-2, W20) vs. Whitney (18-3, R17); 4 p.m., Robinson

Hamilton (24-4, W12) vs. Stamford (16-6, T10); 4 p.m., Mineral Wells

Lipan (19-3, W11) vs. Anson (21-4, R10); 3:30 p.m., Graham

Haskell (19-4, W10) vs. Poolville (19-4, R11); 1 p.m., Graham

Marlin (19-2, W18) vs. La Poynor (19-4, R19); 1:30 p.m., Corsicana MS

UPSET WATCH

Lubbock Cooper (25-3, W4) vs. El Paso Andress (18-2, R1); 1 p.m., Fort Stockton

All eyes on this game will be the battle in the interior as 6-2 junior Bella Sipowicz matches up with Andress’ interior threat in 6-3 Tionna Lidge. Both can showcase their rebounding ability and the big matchup of the game. The big push that either team could make would come from the guard position. 6-1 junior Calyn Dallas can shoot the ball well and with her long frame, be a big impact on the defensive end. Alianna Colon will be a key guard to watch for the Lady Eagles and will look to be an offensive impact in order for a potential upset.

Sanger (20-5, W9) vs. Dallas Pinkston (22-5, R12); 1:30 p.m., Coppell

Sanger has not played a meaningful game since January 29, almost a month as they did not play their bi-district game due to Uplift Summit forfeiting.

Dallas Pinkston is a true sleeper team in Region II of 4A, with solid athletes that can run the floor, with senior Tamia Flores, who can shoot the ball well and has the potential to go Division I.

Sanger wins in the size aspect of the matchup, with 6-2 junior post Bella Ringenberg leading the way in the interior.

Will rust kick in for the Lady Indians after a long layoff?
